Squirrels, Part II: Backyard squirrels, front yard squirrels

ID-100112631I may have made a slight exaggeration in my previous post. I am not ALWAYS up for going to Target. On this particular day, when Nanny was hell bent on going there, I had driven to Alpharetta and back (four hours round trip) and did not feel quite so excited about getting back in the car to go to Target to buy peanuts for the squirrel feeder in the backyard. I pointed out, “You know, we do have a tree that drops acorns. Hundreds of them. They are not going to starve.”

Nanny looked puzzled. “Where? Where is this acorn tree?”

“It’s right there on the side, next to the cars. There are acorns all over the driveway. Let the little furry-tailed rats get out there and clean it up, earn their keep.”

It seemed like the light went on, and she nodded. I think to myself, okay, now we’re getting somewhere. Then she says:

“Oh, that tree. Yes, I know about that tree. But those acorns are for the front yard squirrels.”

There was no arguing with that logic, so I got back in the car and we went to Target. Because in this house, we do not discriminate. The backyard squirrels shall not go unfed!

  1. Your monthly grocery, and Target bills must indicate the amount of enjoyment Nanny gets out of owning a petting zoo. How does she feel about Falcons and Owls?

    • Nanny has her own money so it’s not too bad (my monthly grocery bills are still astronomical, but that’s my own fault). She’s not fond of hawks or falcons because they scoop up the baby bunnnies, but she taught for several decades at an elementary school whose mascot was the owl, so I think she has a soft spot for those. And there is a huge gang of crows that hangs out by the squirrel feeder. I don’t think she likes them, but she tolerates them.

      • Yes, it’s a good way for my cousins to learn about some of the things that happen with their grandmother from day to day. Did you read the previous post about the squirrels, Part I?
